Guests: Lars Kristiansen & Simon Bartter (still technically a guest....)
Apologies: Duane Roy, Craig Farmer, Steve Handley, Scott Emerson & David Madson
Overall, the quality of wines presented was outstanding, and it was the general consensus that it had never been more difficult to pick the bracket winners. With the calibre of wines being so high it was more a matter of stylistic preference
Initially thrown into a spin by the late breaking news of Steve Handley’s inability to attend, much less host the night, the group was courageously rescued by Philippe Mady’s immediate forthcoming offer to assume the role and duties (twice now…). Well done Philippe. The group is in your debt!
All the more pleasing was a last minute booking at Restaurant Atelier for the private room.
In Duane’s absence, David Fatches stood in as Cork Master while providing trademark exhaustive exposes on all manner of viticulture and associated subject matter. Thank you David.
General business and comments as follows:
- Those with excessive absences shall receive a formal warning forthwith in the form of a bottle of Yellow Tail delivered to your home or work place (or bloodied in your bed)
- Lars graciously offered to host the Christmas lunch aboard the ship and will be selecting and supplying the wines together with Duane – acceptance was unanimous
- Duane’s coming as Santa (word of warning…)
- There will be a readying of the naughty and nice list – awards and wot not
- We have to be off by 4pm as the ship sets sale
- Or, we can stow away in Lar’s Stateroom as long as we agree to wear name tags and dance with single little old ladies in the evenings for our keep.
- Themes for 2009 will be determined at the December luncheon
- Everyone to submit (3) themes prior to the lunch. Consensus rules.
- Aim is to enable everyone to source wines well in advance
- New Cork Master & Secretary to be voted on at December Lunch
- Will review protocol and procedure at upcoming dinner
- November Hunter Weekend
- Basically everyone’s coming and its going to be a rip snort’n shindig
The Champagne: Drappier Grande Sandree 2002
Chosen by Philippe Mady, from the Aube region so not a classic or traditional drop, made with a fair bit of Pinot Meunier.
Tasting note: Opened quite yeasty, with apple on the nose, fine bead and good structure. Hard not to like.
. Secretary’s rating 92 pts
The Food:
Once again, very “chefy” but nice………..I can’t remember to be honest.
First Bracket: Old World Vs – New World……that tastes like old world
The points were evenly split between the two wines. The food didn’t match the wines – only a moderate distraction.
Wine #1: Albert Mann, Cuvee Albert 2000
Note: Very sweet on the nose, almost seemed slightly botrytised, low acidity, fat in the mouth, overall lovely stuff – Phil Jacob’s wine
Secretary’s rating 92 pts
Wine #2: Miko Chardonnay Sur Lie 2006 (South African)
Note: Very unusual and difficult to pick, fizzy and metallic nose, seemed to be an older wine perhaps a “Fourcharmes”, almost a bit of a nutty oiliness on the palate. A strange one, the honeymoon must have clouded his judgement…. – Trent Dolphin’s wine
Secretary’s rating 90 pts
Group ranking bracket winner = Tie: Wine #1 (Phil Jacobs & Wine #2 (Trent Dolphin)
Second Bracket: Comfy Whites
All lovely wines. Scored the bracket evenly across all three wines, very difficult to pick a winner.
Wine #1: Rosacker Riesling Grand Cru 2004
Note: Nose of sweet apples with a hint of petrol, great structure and balance, thought to possibly be a Sancerre - Peter McKelvey’s wine
Secretary’s rating 93 pts
Wine #2: Delatte Vs. Limited Edition Riesling 1999 (is this right???)
Note: Stood out immediately as classic Clare Valley sweet/petroly smelling aged Riesling, picked it as being a 1997, nice wine but seemed a bit older than it was. For some reason, I scored it well on the night……a bit foggy on this one.
Secretary’s rating 93 pts
Wine #3: Domaine Zind Humbrecht Herrenweg De Turckheim (vintage??)
Note: Beautiful wine, sweet honeyed nose, classic old Alsatian Riesling…really good, gave it my vote.
Secretary’s rating 93 pts
Group ranking bracket winner = Wine #3 (Dave Fatches)
Third Bracket: Old Burgundy & New Mourvedre
Polar opposites…..
Wine #1: Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre 2006
Note: Obviously very young, plush dark fruits with hints of coffee and chocolate. Very nice but too young too fully appreciate, would love to see again in 10yrs - Scott Perry’s wine
Secretary’s rating 93 pts
Wine #2: Leroy Pommard Les Vignots 1993
Note: Recognised it immediately for what it was – serious, older Burgundy, savoury nose, tannic and seriously structured, stewed rhubarb, leather and herbs, unfortunately a bit dried out and past its prime. Most thought it to be Bordeaux. A privilege and a learning experience – Simon Bartter’s wine.
Secretary’s rating 94 pts
Group ranking bracket winner = Wine #2 (Simon Bartter)
Fourth Bracket: Beauties and the Beast
Cote Rotie shines again…..such good wines
Wine #1: Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Cote Rotie 2002
Note: I can still taste it, beautifully perfumed nose of small berries with a hint of spice and earthy minerals lovely wine, great structure and seamless. Beautiful wine! – Philippe Mady’s wine
Secretary’s rating 96 pts
Wine #2: Bannockburn Shiraz 2000
Note: Very un-Australian shiraz, beautiful nose of sweet fruit and herbs, great complexity and texture. Very nice wine. Most thought it to be Pinot/Burgundy – Phillip Blanco’s wine
Wine #3: Torbreck Run Rig 2002
Note: Nose of Bourbon mash, banana estery, over ripe fruit. A monster of a wine that with huge over ripe fruit and lots of heat on the palate. Classic Run Rig – Lars Kristiansen’s wine
Secretary’s rating 86 pts
Group ranking bracket winner = Wine #1 (Philippe Mady)
Wines of the Night (WOTN)
- Mathilde et Yves Gangloff Cote Rotie 2002 – Philippe Mady (WOTN)
- Leroy Pommard Les Vignots 1993 – Simon Bartter
- Bannockburn Shiraz 2000 - Phillip Blanco
Philippe Mady has claimed his 3rd WOTN and now holds the lead in the point’s standings. Duane is believed to be the only serious threat to the crown with David Fatches lurking in the shadows. The winner will have their national anthem played for all who will stand at full attention at the December luncheon.
Once again, thank you one and all for your outstanding contributions and until tomorrow night – Au Revoir!
